When you watch anime do you watch it in Japanese/another language with English subtitles, just watch the English dub version of it, or not watch anime at all?

I'm not super big into anime; however, I almost always prefer the Japanese dub with English subtitles after watching a few dubs where the English actors don't have passion. One of the first non-mainstream animes I watched was Hajime No Ippo (it's an older boxing anime which I would def suggest if you're into sports anime). I watched it all with subs, then out of curiousity I came across a dubbed episode and man... it was so bland. The VAs just recited their lines and there was no passion from them.

I get not every English dub is like this, but stuff like this turned me off dubbed anime and more towards subbed anime, but what about you. How do you watch your anime?

Depends on the anime. I can't stand Goku's Japanese voice actor in Dragon Ball, and sometimes English dubs are really well done. In most cases, if I watch an anime (which I usually don't) I watch with subtitles. For me I can't stand playing Yakuza games with the English dubs. Sorry but seeing a bunch of Japanese people walking around Japan speaking English just feels too unnatural. Glad it's an option for people who want it though, I much prefer the fantastic Japanese voice acting cast for Yakuza games though. I like watching Pokemon Journeys with the English dub though. So yeah. Depends on what it is.

Depends. 99% of the time I go for the english dub but there can be exceptions. Dragon Maid's english dub was unavailable to me at the time so I had to watch subbed instead, so now I stick to subs on that series for consistency lol. If I ever watch One Piece I *might* go for subs purely because the english dub uses the EXACT SAME VOICES as Dragon Ball Z and it's really distracting. ...or maybe I'll just watch the 4Kids dub lol. less episodes! XP

I pretty much watch everything in sub, lol. The only animes I don't are shit that I watched weekly on Toonami - Samurai Champloo, Pokemon, Naruto (I can do either sub or dub), bleach (same deal here), prince of tennis (also same), Death note (also same), etc. Anything that I didn't grow up on watching in English I just don't bother listening to the dub. And yes, I do like to joke around with dub watchers as if watching dubbed is a sin. Anime overall is dope, though, so always nice to talk about it with anyone whether they watched sub or dub.

That's fair, funny enough from what I watched of Journeys/the Pokemon anime I much preferred the Japanese dub to the English one.

I mean the 4KIDS Dub also has a pretty banger 4th of July song if I remember correctly. Tongue

Honestly that pattern works for me, I watch most mainstream stuff in the English dub (not Pokemon though) but authentic non-mainstream anime I'll use the Japanese dub with English subs.

Almost always with subtitles. The only times I'll watch dubbed is for re-watches at times. Ghost Stories I will be watching dubbed whenever I get to it. Also, this clip is great.

I don't think I've ever considered watching with English dub once I realized how much better subs are

I watch with English dubs cus I find it easier in 2x speed (yes, this is how I watch anime). Plus I like to multitask.

I agree on both points. An anime that I thought had a really good dub was Love is War.

Almost entirely subbed. I tend to find the English voices to not fit the characters, or attempts at comedy don't translate well when it's the voice of a 30-something year old I recognise. I tried watching Demon Slayer dubbed out of curiosity, couldn't stand how Zenitsu came out.

The only dubs I actively choose to watch are the really notable ones the community knows about to date. Ghost Stories, Panty & Stocking, Death Note, Cowboy Bebop, just to name a few. Then there's the likes of Pokemon which I've never known anything but the dub. I've watched a few movies dubbed, too. The production quality is higher and I can get invested in it.
